Discovery Channel special PUSHING THE LIMITS offers an amazing anatomy lesson in extreme close-up. Using cutting-edge micro cameras, the series reveals the inner workings of eyes, muscles, nerves, and even the human brain.
You've never seen the HUMAN BODY like this before. In this groundbreaking series, we push the human form to its extremes, capturing both the power and the poetry. You will be surprised and even shocked as stunning CGI effects and the latest in cutting-edge photography reveal the body's inner and outer workings in vivid detail.
Biologists, artists, and people of all pursuits have long been fascinated by the human body. Meticulously designed to vault mankind to the top of the food chain in every regard, our frames continue to be a source of awe, wonder, and scientific study. The most brilliant minds on the planet have attempted to quantify the body's natural abilities, but have found the extent of our senses to be immeasurable, the limits of our strength to be incalculable, and the speed of our reactions to be unfathomable. Their conclusion? Centuries from now, we may be struggling with the very same questions we're asking today... with the very same unsolved mysteries people have been pondering over for millennia. In short, we may never fully comprehend the inner-workings and capabilities of our own bodies.
Debuting on The Discovery Channel in early 2008, Human Body: Pushing the Limits offers four interrelated, progressively intriguing episodes that clock in at just over forty minutes a piece. While the facts presented aren't revolutionary by any means, their presentation is. By focusing on real people and their extraordinary true stories, the series manages to humanize its subject matter, making the driest factoids more compelling and the most heavy-handed scientific analysis more engaging.
The series' Guess What Else?! tone starts to wear thin after a while, but I was continually intrigued by its dissection of the body, our unconscious impulses, and our most innate survival mechanisms. Some of the true tales are so utterly unbelievable that I simply couldn't wrap my brain around them, yet each firsthand account rang true and each survivor kept me on the edge of my intellectual seat. I'm sure medical professionals and pre-med students will yawn their way through every episode, but this layman was fascinated from beginning to end. And at a mere $20, it's tough to go wrong. Give it a try and see if it captures your imagination as much as it did mine.
